“New Portrait of our Planet”

While rifling through our basement, I found this vintage world map! My grandpa ordered it from LIFE in 1960. Definitely want to frame & hang it someday.

The NPR review of Bully:

Bully is a wrenching, intensely moral film, and so potentially useful to children who are either being bullied, or doing the bullying, that the MPAA’s Victorian prudery about a few instances of schoolyard language can’t help but seem boneheaded.” — Bob Mondello

Netizens Mourn After A Moroccan Girl Who Was Forced To Marry Her Rapist Commits Suicide

#RIPAmina is gaining traction following the suicide of a young girl, Amina from Larache, Morocco. According to online reports, Amina was raped by a man 10 years her senior a year ago. Following an agreement between her family and a civil court Amina was forced to marry her rapist, which protected him from any criminal charges according to Moroccan penal code.

The snapshot below highlights Article 475 from Moroccan law which decrees that anyone who rapes a female minor, under the age of 18, will receive immunity from criminal charges as long as they marry the minor.

Women’s rights groups in Morocco, like Mouvement Alternatif pour les Libertés Individuelles (MALI), have been vocal in their opposition against Article 475.

MALI issued the following press release on March 8, also International Women’s Day, to protest Moroccan law.

INHUMANITY   Egyptian army soldiers assault and arrest a female protester during clashes in Tahrir Square in Cairo on Saturday.  The country’s military rulers escalated a bloody crackdown on street protesters, beating them and setting their tents ablaze, even as the prime minister Kamel Ganzouri denied in a televised news conference that security forces were using violence.  (Photo: Reuters via the New York Times)

Photo Series of the Day: A fairly depressing series of photographs from North Korea’s version of the happiest place on Earth: Mangyongdae funfair.

The amusement park, located a few miles north of Pyongyang, is the last of its kind in the dreary dictatorship, and certainly fits the milieu.

Chock full of dilapidated and downright dangerous rides, Mangyongdae tests its deadly attractions on local farmers before allowing foreign visitors aboard.

Milestone of the Day: Danica May Camacho, born just before midnight last night at Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital in Manila, was symbolically chosen by the United Nations to represent the seven billionth baby born on Earth.

Though the UN named October 31st Seven Billion Day, some groups questioned the accuracy of the estimate, saying the seven billionth baby will more likely be born next year.

Matej Gaspar of Croatia and the family of 12-year-old Adnan Nevic of Bosnia Herzogovina — the fifth and sixth billionth babies, respectively — have voiced complaints that the UN celebrated their births, only to ignore them in the years since.

“We saw Kofi Annan as almost like a godfather to him,” says Jasminko, Adnan’s father. “He held me up when I was two days old but since then we have heard nothing from them.”
